AiKea supporters joined other individuals & community groups at the Mana March in Kauai on September 8, 2013 in support of Kauai’s Bill 249.

AiKea believes that workers have the right to work in safe, healthy environments. This is why we support Kauai Bill 2491.  This bill would require big corporate biotech companies to disclose what pesticides they use and to create safe buffer zones around schools, hospitals, and homes. GMO farms are not safe and healthy work environments, as they expose their workers and the community around them to dangerous pesticides.

On September 27, Bill 2491 was approved by the Economic Development committee. Kauai County Council passed the bill on October 16, 2013. The bill was passed to Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho to sign into law, but the Mayor vetoed the bill on October 31, 2013. County Council voted 5-2 to override the Mayor’s veto on November 16, 2013, turning the bill into law.
